The Duo Hotel is situated on vast land full of greenery in a quiet part of Prague. This cannot be ignored even from afar. It is built in a classical style prefabricated building, and as it has been restored, don´t expect a typical grey colour. It contains all colours, not only outside but also inside.
Do not expect any flashy design elements, but a rather classically decorated hotel. This also shows in the price, which compared with competitors in the same category is at a much lower level.
What's most important in a hotel for guests? ”Comfortable beds and excellent breakfast“ replies the owner, who has travelled the world and knows what he is talking about. The hotel concept is governed by this motto.
Maybe at first you'll need a little time to get used to the design of the interior, because it is conceived differently than in other hotels. It has a homely atmosphere and evokes a cozy environment. Cold marble is deliberately not incorporated in lobby spaces and although interesting to look at there are none of those uncomfortable chairs and seats. And it works - even late at night the reception rooms and a lobby is full of guests relaxing in comfortable cloth couches.
The entire hotel could be called a huge picture gallery, throughout the hotel there are thousands of pictures. The owner of the hotel Mr. Jan Horal, has a great passion in shopping for new images, especially in second-hand bookshops. A piece that´s worth it always emerges from his purchases. The owner is very lucky to own such a large hotel, where images can be permanently placed. Walk through the hotel corridors on 10 floors and two wings, it provides you with a great artistic experience.
The air museum and RAF Club is also an integral part of the hotel, which Mr. Horal who is almost ninety founded and operates in the honour of the brave pilots of the Royal Air Force Czechoslovak division. He was awarded the Medal for Bravery and the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E) by Queen Elizabeth, and also numerous other awards in other countries.
Due to the size of the hotel, which has 600 rooms, the hotel is ideal for group tours, congresses and corporate clients who need to stay at reasonable cost. But individual clients are also certainly very welcome, who will be pleasant surprised at the price
Since the hotel consists of two high interconnected buildings of a prefab type, there was a lot to repair. Repairs and renovations at the hotel are constantly taking place for the comfort of its guests, but also to improve the design of the hotel.
The hard work is done, but the remains of the communist-style buildings are still here. The aim of the hotel management was to cheer and brighten it up, and it was quite successful. Each floor consists of different colours, if rooms are available, you can choose the interior wall colour yourself! The Duo Hotel could appoint the name of Rainbow rather than Duo.
Everything is tuned to the warm colours, but the interior is not impressive. The interior is more tuned to the style of the late nineties. There is plenty of space and the beds are very comfortable. A little bit lacking is bathroom design and equipment, which would be more likened to a three-star standard. Everything is functional and sparkling clean.
On the ground floor there are even a few simple rooms available for disabled guests with every comfort and adjustable beds.
The facilities are also well equipped, in terms of conference rooms and lounges of various sizes. Thought was also given to larger groups, to which their own breakfast restaurant is dedicated. On the entire first floor you will find a variety of rooms for conferences, balls, social events, etc.
The spacious lobby bar and a lobby area welcomes you in a pleasant homely atmosphere and comfortable seating. You will feel like you are in your own living room. The guest lobby is very popular, so the bar is open until two o'clock in the morning. Though, prices of drinks are somewhat higher.
Next to lobby you can find ZOO corner with 9 colourful parrots, turtles and fish. Next door is an internet corner with several computers and a tour desk with an inexhaustible range of excursions and cultural programs.
Guests are also offered two restaurants - Gourmet and Formanka. The stylish Formanka restaurant is a real Moravian gem with special decorations - historical pipes, musical instruments and period photographs. You will find the best Czech specialties in the simple menu, which are excellently prepared and very tasty. The service is very friendly and they are happy to advise you regarding the speciality of the day.
A big advantage is the endless series of accompanying services and leisure opportunities offered by the hotel. There is something for everyone here. The hotel thought about everything, there is perhaps no service that has been missed.
Most of the hotel services are located in the basement - a twenty-metre pool with a depth of 160 cm, from which there is access to the garden, a small private and large public sauna with a cooling pool, gym, racquetball, twelve lanes of quality bowling with a bar, traditional and Thai massage, hairdresser, manicure, pedicure, beauty salon and more. Next to the entrance to the hotel is the Casino Borneo for those who want to rev up their money.
Worth mentioning is also the huge grassy plot of the hotel, where you can relax under the canopies of mature trees. Blended into it, is a spacious garden with outdoor bar, sun loungers and a sun terrace belonging to a covered swimming pool, large playground, historic carriages, wooden wheels and old farm hand machines. Sit in the garden on the swing and soak up the peaceful atmosphere and energy resulting from the ubiquitous greenery.
If you prefer more traditional white walls and simple decent equipment, then the hotel is not for you. Each floor plays with different colours, often not blending with each other. On the other side, coloured walls and carpets act cheerfully, although sometimes too much.
Despite the enormous amount of guests, the hotel staff can handle everything perfectly and does not leave you unattended for long. That is to say, when the hotel is fully booked there are suddenly about 1200 people!
If you listen to one of the incredible stories of Mr. Horal, the hotel owner who has experienced two world wars, you will understand how much effort this person put into his life and why he actually bought this hotel and built it the way it is. You will have the opportunity to meet with him every day in the hotel lobby. In his old age he works daily and takes care of all his hotels (The Duo in Prague, Ruze and The Old Inn in Cesky Krumlov) and keeps his watchful eye over them. He is also always accompanied by his faithful dogs - long-haired dachshunds.
